Text: Luke 7:11-17

Jesus Raises the Son of the Widow of Nain

11Now it happened, the day after, that He went into a city called Nain; and many of His disciples went with Him, and a large crowd. 12And when He came near the gate of the city, behold, a dead man was being carried out, the only son of his mother; and she was a widow. And a large crowd from the city was with her. 13When the Lord saw her, He had compassion on her and said to her, “Do not weep.” 14Then He came and touched the open coffin, and those who carried him stood still. And He said, “Young man, I say to you, arise.” 15So he who was dead sat up and began to speak. And He presented him to his mother.

16Then fear [b]came upon all, and they glorified God, saying, “A great prophet has risen up among us”; and, “God has visited His people.” 17And this report about Him went throughout all Judea and all the surrounding region.

The only son of a widow had died. Her friends, well-wishers and supporters after trying their best to comfort her, were accompanying her on a trip of pain, sorrow and tears. She was on the way to bury her only son. She encountered Jesus and her story changed for good. The young man came back to life because He encountered the source of life Himself.

May you have an encounter with the positively transforming power of God today in Jesus name.

What can we learn from the story before we pray?

1.     It happened: Something good will happen to you. Our God is the one who causes good things to happen to His people and those who trusts in Him. Satan and his cohorts cause bad things to happen. Our God is the one who can do exceedingly abundantly above all we can ever ask or even think about (Ephesians 3:20). He also causes good things to happen suddenly because He is the God of the suddenly. According to Malachi 3:1 – the God you seek will suddenly appear in your situation in Jesus name. May Good things happen for you and yours suddenly in Jesus name.

2.     Jesus went into the city of Nain. Nain means beauty, pleasantness. However, what was on display was an ugly, unpleasant situation involving the death of an only beloved son and a widow who was weeping so much and could not be comforted. Are you faced with situations that should be beautiful, welcoming, fruitful, and beneficial but instead is unpleasant, unwelcoming, distasteful, stressing, frustrating or overwhelming?

Do not worry, as Jesus appeared on the scene and changed the unpleasant situation of that widow to a pleasant one of rejoicing; Jesus will appear in your situation and turn your situation around for good in Jesus name.

3.     Many of Jesus’ disciples and a large crowd were with Jesus. Several people saw the widow crying and dejected. They also witnessed her miracle, saw her rejoicing and laughter.

Those who have seen you stressed, weeping or overwhelmed will see you rejoicing, glad and witness your miracle in Jesus name.

Many will witness your new season of Joy in Jesus mighty name.

4.     The Jesus who appeared on the scene is the one who gives beauty in place of ashes, oil of joy in place of mourning and a garment of praise in place of a spirit of heaviness (garment of mourning). – Isaiah 61:1-3

This same faithful God will give you the beauty in place of ashes, the oil (anointing and empowerment) of joy in place of mourning and a garment of praise in place of a spirit of heaviness (troubled spirit).

5.     Jesus came near the gate of the city: A gate represents the entrance into a city and exit out of a city. It is a place of traffic. Life changing decisions are made at the gates of life, transactions are concluded at the gates (Ruth 4:1-10, Genesis 23:10), gates lead to destruction or life (Matthew 7:3).

May Jesus appear at your gate and cause you to prevail in Jesus name.

6.     Don’t bury your dead: A dead man was being carried to the graveyard for burial as Jesus was passing by. You may have goals that appear to be dead, dead aspirations, dead dreams etc. Don’t bury them, Jesus is passing by.

His compassion will give life to your hopes and dreams.

They will live again and bring joy and rejoicing to great crowds in Jesus name.

7.     The dead man was the only son of his mother: Losing a child or family member is not a pleasant experience. May God preserve our children and family members in Jesus name. There were many families with several children, that they may even be finding it difficult to cope with taking care of them, the devil did not visit those homes, but went to the woman that had an only child. She must have been very happy when she got married and happier still when her family was blessed with a son. Then the devil struck, took her husband and then took son.

Your loved ones will not be snatched away from you by the devil and his agents of sickness, afflictions or accidents in Jesus name.

8.     The woman was a widow: A widow is representative of someone who is dependent on others for assistance, may not be able to support herself or is in need. This is why the Bible enjoins us to care for widows (1 Timothy 5:4-11). The husband that would have cared for her was gone, the son that would have taken up that responsibility was now gone leaving her hopeless and in want. Jesus changed her story.

Jesus will change your story of lack, need and dependence on others today for good in Jesus name.

9.     Jesus had compassion on her: The empathy and sympathy of Jesus moved Him to intervene in the situation.

May God have compassion on you and intervene in your situation in Jesus name.

10.Jesus said to her: “Do not weep”. God wiped away her tears. Tears of sorrow was turned to tears of joy. Only Jesus can truly wipe tears away.

He will wipe away your tears today and give you joy in Jesus name. The Bible states in Psalm 16:11 that: You will show me the path of life; In Your presence is fullness of joy; At Your right hand are pleasures forevermore.

11.Jesus touched the coffin and those carrying the coffin stood still: Jesus halted the negative progression towards the graveyard and lifelong sorrow.

Jesus will halt every negative progression in your life today in Jesus name.

12.Jesus spoke the words of life to the young man: He said, “Young man, I say to you, arise.” 15So he who was dead sat up and began to speak. And He presented him to his mother.

Jesus will speak words of life and resurrection into your life and situation in Jesus name and every good dead thing will come to life in Jesus name.

13. Fear came on all who were there and they glorified God: Jesus will transform your life and the life of your loved ones in a way that men will fear Him and it will bring glory to His name in the name of Jesus. The Bible states in Psalm 67:6b -7 that :  God, even our own God, shall bless us. 7God shall bless us; and all the ends of the earth shall fear him.

14.People acknowledged that God has visited His People:

People will acknowledge that God has visited you and your family in Jesus name.

In Psalm 126 the Bible says:

The Lord Has Done Great Things for Us

1{A Song of degrees.} When the LORD turned again the captivity of Zion, we were like them that dream.

2Then was our mouth filled with laughter, and our tongue with singing: then said they among the heathen, The LORD hath done great things for them.

3The LORD hath done great things for us; whereof we are glad.

4Turn again our captivity, O LORD, as the streams in the south.

5They that sow in tears shall reap in joy.

6He that goeth forth and weepeth, bearing precious seed, shall doubtless come again with rejoicing, bringing his sheaves with him.

God will visit your family in such a way that people will be testifying of Gods’ goodness to you and will also broadcast the testimony on behalf of your family in Jesus mighty name.
